Most visitors to the United Arab Emirates restrict themselves to the extravagant showcase cities of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. But a short drive from the glitz and glamour lie these lesser-known Emirates, home to beautiful beaches and fascinating cultural sights.

 

 

Dubai’s conservative next-door neighbour, Sharjah is regarded as the cultural capital of the United Arab Emirates. Its fascinating Heritage Area boasts an abundance of beautifully-restored traditional buildings, and the city’s museums, galleries and theatres are some of the best on the Arabian Peninsula.

 

With beautiful white-sand beaches and affordable waterfront hotels, laid-back Ajmer is the perfect spot for a Middle Eastern beach break. Join the locals for a stroll along the oceanfront promenade or visit the wonderful Ajman Museum, housed in an old fort.

 

The fishing port of Umm al-Quwain offers a relaxing alternative to bustling Dubai. Watch craftsmen assembling traditional wooden boats at the dhow-building yard, hunt for crabs on sandy mangrove islands or splash out at the massive Dreamland Water Park.

 

Ras al-Khaimah is the UAE’s northernmost Emirate. Backed by the spectacular Hajar Mountains, this fertile region entices travellers with tranquil lagoons and relatively undeveloped beaches. The National Museum showcases the natural and cultural history of the area and features a fabulous old wind tower.

 

Fujairah is the gateway to the east coast of the UAE. While the city itself has little to offer tourists, the surrounding area boasts pristine beaches, fantastic fishing and a number of excellent snorkelling and diving spots.
