Left virtually untouched by the destruction of the Second World War, Prague is one of the world’s most beautiful cities, and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  It is instantly captivating with its splendid Gothic and Baroque architecture and hilly landscape.  Like Rome, this city is built on seven hills, with the Vltava River meandering through its heart.  Since the fall of communism, tourists have flooded this city. 

See:

• Prague Castle – This sprawling castle complex is built high on one of Prague’s hills and is Prague’s most important attractions.
• Charles Bridge – Built in 1357, this was the only bridge in Prague until 1841.  It is now a pedestrian bridge that is often crowded with buskers and artists.
• Loreta – An extravagant Baroque convent that houses an amazing treasury.
• Old Town Square – The heart of Prague, this square is surrounded by magnificent architecture.
• Wenceslas Square – This bustling square filled with people and shopping, and is particularly lively at night.

Experience:

• St Vitus Cathedral – Climbing to the top of this narrow staircase is gruelling but rewarding, with spectacular views over the terracotta roofs of the city. 
• Josefov – The former Jewish quarter of the city provides a sometimes disturbing experience of the effects of the Holocaust

Secrets of the City:

• Petrin Tower – A replica of the more famous Eiffel Tower of Paris, this tower was built in 1891, and gives some of the best views in Prague (and is much easier to scale than the St Vitus Cathedral!).  It is surrounded by a large park and beautiful gardens. 
• Vysehrad – A little distance from the centre, the Vysehrad Citadel offers interesting history, and magnificent views across the Vltava Valley.
