Your Anzac Day Experience
It should be remembered that this site can not be regarded as a tourist destination. Consequently it lacks some of the infrastructure that one comes to expect at such a place.
Gallipoli sites are remote, and involve walking up to 3 kilometres – mainly on clearly defined paved or graded roadways. Security is usually quite tight, which is reassuring if somewhat inconvenient with some last minute changes to coach access arrangements or unexpected delays and road congestion.
Visits to the site involves a very early start and much waiting around in the dark as seating can be limited and cannot be reserved in advance. Please bear in mind that temperatures in Europe are usually low at this time of year, especially in the hours before dawn when visitors will be patiently waiting for the ceremonies to begin. Rain is not unusual and there is very little if any real shelter from the elements. At Gallipoli, it is usual for visitors to leave Canakkale during the night so that they can take up their positions in the hours before dawn.
The secret to a successful Anzac Day is preparation. We suggest that visitors bring appropriate warm clothing and footwear - a blanket or groundsheet is also very useful. We provide box breakfasts. Adequate toilet facilities are available locally, and limited catering facilities offer hot drinks and some hot food. Patience and tolerance for local conditions, crowds and a long day are essential.
