Home to an extraordinary array of flora and fauna that exists nowhere else in the world, the Galapagos Islands are one the world’s most precious ecosystems. Situated in a remote corner of the Pacific Ocean, these islands are 1000 km from the Ecuadorian coast and directly on the equator. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the Galapagos Islands are famous for the rare and delightful encountering with the animal world. Island Hotspots: Isabela (Ablemarle) – Almost 130 km in length, Isabela is the largest island in the archipelago. This island consists on a chain of five volcanoes, with Volcano Wolf being the highest. Volcano Sierra Negra, located at the southern end of Isabela, is one of the most impressive examples of a volcano in the archipelago Santa Cruz (Indefatigable) – The second largest island and centre for tourism in the Galapagos is Santa Cruz. The small town of Puerto Ayora, in Santa Cruz, is not only the economic centre of the archipelago but it also has the highest population. It is also the headquarters of the Galapagos National Park and home to the Charles Darwin Research Station. Fernandina (Narborough) – The third largest, youngest and most western island in the Galapagos is Fernandina. This island has one of the most active volcanoes in the region. It is also well known for its large groups of marine iguanas. Bartolome – This small Island, inside Sullivan Bay, is a volcanic islet just off the east coast of Santiago Island. It is famous for its Pinnacle Rock, the distinctive characteristic of this island and the most representative landmark of the Galapagos. San Cristobal (Chatham) – This Island is the starting point for many Galapagos Island cruises and is the fifth largest. Apart from a Natural History Interpretation Centre recently built in town, the islands sites also include Kicker Rock, a tranquil islet and nesting place for wildlife.
