Coca is located at the junction of the Rivers Coca and Napo and is the capital of the province of Orellana. Coca’s official name is Puerto Francisco de Orellana, after the first Spaniard to navigate the length of the Amazon. Its central streets, Napo and Amazonas run north-south and are the busiest in the few blocks around the river. This is the gateway to the primary rainforest of the rio Napo basin, either down the Rio Napo itself or south along the Via Auca.

Regional Hotspots:

• The Amazon Jungle – is the world’s largest remaining rainforest, stretching from eastern Ecuador to the Atlantic Ocean and covers an area almost as large as the continental USA. Fully one-third of Ecuador consists of Amazonian rainforest. 
• Puyo – is located just 100 kilometres from Ambato in the Andes. The town is becoming popular for its cultural tradition and fairs where you can see the customs of the locals. There are also handicrafts and other samples of the indigenous cultures of Shuar, Achuar, Huaorani and Alama.
• Zamora – is surrounded by a variety of flora and fauna, including tapirs, capybaras, agoutis, pumas, birds and insects. It is known as the mining capital of the country and is home ot the gold mines of Nambija, Chinapinza and Guayzimi.
• Yasuni National Park – is made up of an infinite succession of small, soft hills that are the result of the millennia of passing rivers. The Park includes important watersheds of the Napo and other rivers and several tributaries of the Curaray, the river which b orders the park to the south.
• Cloud Forest – is a cloud forest of specific type of tropical rainforest found only in the mountainous areas. The forest is immersed in clouds most of the time, with water being deposited directly from the clouds onto leaves and other vegetation. Cloud forests are unique ecosystems that occur only in specific tropical mountain areas. The distinctive weather conditions make them suitable for thousands of plants and animals that can be found nowhere else on earth. 
• Bird watching – within continental Ecuador, there are more than 1800 species of birds, which makes this the fourth country in the world for bird diversity. There are 131 species of Hummingbirds in Ecuador and their beauty and peculiar way of flying makes them popular among bird watchers.
• Andean condor – is the largest of the Ecuadorian highlands. Although this animal is in danger of becoming extinct, as a scavenger, is essential to the natural processes of the ecosystems where it’s found.
