Hurghada is a beach resort on Egypt’s magnificent Red Sea coast. This former fishing town is a luxurious place to swim, snorkel, dive or just relax, and the surrounding desert has some fascinating cultural and historical sights.
See:
Monastery of St Anthony – A full day trip from Hurghada, this is the oldest surviving Christian monastery in the world. Dating back to the 4th century AD, the St Anthony’s monastic retreat features some magnificent mediaeval paintings and a beautiful garden. If you’re feeling energetic, you can climb up to the cave where the saint spent the last 40 years of his life.
Monastery of St Paul. Quieter than St Anthony’s, this monastery has some amazing biblical murals and a fortress where the monks took shelter from marauding Bedouins.
Giftun Islands – Just off the coast of Hurghada, these protected islands are surrounded by vibrant coral reefs and idyllic sand beaches. It’s a beautiful spot for snorkelling or lazing in the sun.
Mons Porphyrites – This 2000-year-old quarry was the ancient source of Porphyry – a crystalline purple stone highly prized by Roman Emperors. The Empire’s demand for Porphyry created a whole town at this site, the ruins of which can still be seen.
Mons Claudianus – An ancient Roman fortress and granite quarry, where unfortunate Roman prisoners were sentenced to a life of hard labour. You can see the remains of prison cells amongst the ruins.
Experience:
Diving – Hurghada is overflowing with dive operators willing to take you to one of the many off-shore scuba sites. Sheer walls, stunning reefs and opportunities to spot dolphins, sharks and manta rays make diving one of Hurghada’s most popular activities.
Quad Bike Safari – If camel rides are a bit sedate for you, why not zoom off into the desert on an all-terrain quad bike? Speed across the sands to experience Bedouin villages and unforgettable scenery.
Submarine Rides – Want to explore the underwater world without getting wet? Take a ride in Hurghada’s very own submarine, which will transport you safely to a depth of over 20m.
