Toledo is located in Castilla-La Mancha on a plateau some 529 metres above sea level. Just 43 miles from Madrid, encircled by the River Tagus, the historic city sits on a craggy rock and boasts more than 100 monuments.  In 1987 the city was declared a World Heritage city by UNESCO due in part to its unique mix of Christian, Jewish and Islamic culture and architecture and known fondly as the city of three cultures.

See: 

• Casa Museo El Greco (Museum – Home of El Greco ) – A 16th century house consisting of two buildings with gardens and courtyards and containing numerous works by El Greco and other famous 17th century Spanish artists., plus furniture and ceramics from the same period.
• Puerta del Cambron (Shrub Gateway) – Given the name due to the shrubs that surround the gate.  Renaissance style and built on an old Visigoth gateway, which is today the only one open to traffic.
• Alcantara Bridges – built during the Middle Ages, of Roman design a fine and stunning example of a fortified entrance to the city, adorned with a statue to St Idelfonso and the Catholic Monarch’s coat of arms. Take a stroll along the bridge and take in the city sights
• St Martin Bridge – built in the early Middle Ages, originally made of stone, but with several modifications to the towers to ensure the structure is sound.  This makes for a very well preserved bridge with 5 arches.  A national monument since 1921.

• Damascene Factory – Toledo has long been famous for its swords, pottery, marzipan, embroidery and damascene work (metal inlaid with gold thread). Visit one of the damascene factories in the city and discover more about this rare art form, plus take home a great souvenir.
