Regional Hot Spots:

• Bilbao – located in Vizcaya in the Basque region; formerly a dark industrial city, has now been totally re-invigorated with new buildings, industries and quirky designs.  Home to the famous Guggenheim Museum, designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry; the Euskladuna Concert Hall, the Norman Foster designed underground system and the airport built by Calatrava along with the new tram projects. Surrounded by forests, mountains and beaches, this city is a great destination for the city or outdoor traveller.
• San Sebastián – located in Guipúzcoa in the Basque region, and also known as Donostia, the city is located along a fine white sandy beach on the Cantabrian Coast.  San Sebastián is a fabulous destination and offers monuments, museums, a palace, sports, great cuisine, sea and mountains.  The city also enjoys international prestige each year with the San Sebastián International Film Festival held every September where you might catch a glimpse of your favourite Hollywood Film Star.
• Santiago de Compostela – the capital of Galicia and World Heritage City.  It is the last stop on the famous St James pilgrimage route which spans the entire north coast of Spain.  With a history of development the city has been left with a unique mix of Christian heritage and large Baroque buildings and monuments. Due to its location it is a perfect starting point to discover the province of La Coruña with its fascinating lighthouses and medieval fishing villages.
• Santillana del Mar – this Cantabrian village with cobblestone streets and ancient buildings provides the visitor with a feeling of timelessness.  Described as a living medieval museum and declared a National Monument the village homes were built between the 14th and 18th centuries. Its small size means it can easily be discovered on foot. The most important building is the St Juliana’s collegiate church, built in the 12th century and being the very foundation of the village. Also close by to Santillana you will find the Altamira Caves, discovered in 1879 and declared a UNESCO cultural heritage site.  The 300 metre long caves have over 150 engravings by Palaeolithic man depicting bisons, wild boars and scenes of daily life. These caves can only be visited by prior arrangement.
