Well removed from the big cities, the white villages or ‘Pueblos Blancos’ as they are affectionately known throughout Spain, can be found in abundance throughout Andalucía. These villages display real Spanish living and fine examples of white-washed houses, cobblestone streets and red-tiled rooftops.

Regional Hot Spots:

• Arcos de la Frontera – Named originally by the Romans as Arx-Arcis which meant high fortress, for its elevated location on the side of a cliff. A magnificent setting and a fine example of a white village with the castle, town hall and 14th century Santa Maria church located in the Plaza de Cabildo.  Located near to the square are old noble house and palaces of local aristocrats as well as an 18th century convent.
• Jerez de la Frontera – World famous for its sherry and dancing horses, Jerez is just 15 km from the sea. Home to numerous bodegas – wine cellars –and home to the famous Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art.  The city offers some fine monasteries and churches in varying styles, an archaeological museum, a clock museum, an Alcázar (Arab Castles/Fort) and an 18th century Baroque cathedral. There is a motorcycle and race car track used in the Spanish grand prix each year.  Jerez is close to the popular beachside destination of Sanlucar de Barrameda and Doñana National Park.
• Ronda – has gone from being a Celtic village to Roman, Arab and finally Christian under the Catholic Monarchs.  Affectionately known as ‘Queen of the White Villages’ located high up offering great views and with a magnificent 18th century bridge crossing over the deep Tajo gorge.  The old Moorish Quarter is the place to experience ancient alleyways, houses and mansions of old nobility. While in the new part of the city ‘El Mercadillo’ you will find most of the city’s’ inhabitants and the magnificent bullring constructed in 1785, Spain’s oldest bullring.  The city has well preserved Arab baths dating from 13th and 14th centuries, lovely churches, palaces and museums, providing plenty to keep the visitor entertained whilst enjoying the local bars and cafes.
