• Abbot Hall Art Gallery – Occupying an elegant Georgian villa in Kendal, this riverside gallery houses a fine collection of portraits and Lakeland landscapes. First-rate temporary exhibitions showcase the work of British and international artists.
• Honister Slate Mine – Grab your helmet and head underground for a fascinating tour of these historic mines, parts of which are still operating today. Feeling adventurous? Then strap yourself into a safety harness and tackle the Via Ferrata – an unforgettable climb along ladders, across cliff faces and through narrow mineshafts.
• Furness Abbey – Set in a peaceful valley, this 700-year-old sandstone building was once the second-richest Cistercian monastery in England. Now lying in ruins, the abbey retains its majestic beauty, and is well worth an hour or two of your time.
• Dove Cottage – Located on the edge of Grasmere, this former pub was once the home of one of England’s greatest poets – William Wordsworth. William wrote many of his famous odes while living in the cottage, now part of the superb Wordsworth Museum.  
• Beatrix Potter Gallery – Children’s author and illustrator Beatrix Potter was greatly inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of the Lakes District. This museum in Hawkshead showcases many of her original paintings and sketches from such classic works as The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
• Muncaster Castle – Dating back to 1208, this impressive family castle is set amongst 70 acres of stunning Himalayan gardens. The interior boasts a fabulous collection of artwork and antiques, while the nearby World Owl Centre is home to more that 40 different species of owl. Keep your eyes peeled for supernatural happenings – Muncaster Castle is reportedly one of the most haunted buildings in England!
