Unique history, beautiful surrounds and a romantic ambiance make the walled town of Avignon a must for visitors to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region of France.  Famous, or perhaps infamous, for being home to the Papacy during a turbulent period in the history of the Catholic Church, Avignon has some of the best examples of 14th century Gothic architecture.  The grand Popes’ Palace (Palais des Papes) overlooks the Rhône River and the famous Saint Bénézet Bridge (or the Pont d’Avignon as it is known in the famous French song), which are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, make Avignon a must for visitors to the Provence region.

• Pope’s Palace – Begun in 1316, this immense structure resembles a fortress rather than a palace.  UNESCO World Heritage-listed, it is a fascinating chapter of the history of the Catholic Church
• Saint Bénézet Bridge – Originally built in the 12th century, there are just 4 remaining arches of the original 22 that once spanned the Rhône for a length of around 900 metres.  It was the only river crossing between Lyon and the Mediterranean, giving it great strategic importance.  It suffered numerous collapses and damage during floods.  Restoration efforts were abandoned in 1668.
• Notre Dame des Doms – The cathedral that stands next to the Pope’s Palace has a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary atop its tower.
• City Walls – Walls built by the Popes in the 14th century to protect the city remain well preserved.

• The name Avignon is said to originate from the Celtic “Avenio” meaning “the town of violent winds”.  The strong winds from the river valley can be particularly harsh in winter.
