Kefalonia is the largest island of the Ionian group displaying rugged and towering mountains, the highest of which is Mt Ainos (or Mt Enos) located in the south. It is an island of contrasts from its enchanting shores to its remarkable natural highlands. This well-preserved garden island is known for having many species of wild flowers, including 60 different orchids.

Island Hotspots:

• Argostoli – The capital, port and largest of the Kefalonia villages is Argostoli. The central square of this village is Plateia Valianoum, a large and pleasant square boarded by many restaurants, cafes and bars. This town’s closest beaches are Makrys Gialos and Platys Gialos.
• Sami – Situated approximately 25 km from Argostoli is Sami, the second main port of Kefalonia. Sights to visit in Sami include Mellisani cave, a subterranean seawater lake 2.5 km from Sami; Drogarati, 4 km from Sami, a large cave that has impressive stalactites and Agia Evthymia a picturesque fishing village with a pebbled beach only 10 km north of Sami.
• Fiskardo – This picturesque fishing village is one of the few villages that was not destroyed by the disastrous earthquake in 1953. It is located 50 km north of Argostoli and features an extended Roman cemetery, a Mycenaean pottery and it is surrounded by cypress pine trees and Venetian style buildings.
• Lixouri – Kefalonia’s second largest town is Lixouri. Lixouri has one of the oldest and most important orchestras of Greece. Close by are also a number of unspoilt beaches including Lepeda and red-sanded Xi beach.
• Kastro – Located 9 km southeast of Argostoli, Kastro was once the island’s capital in the Middle Ages. It is known for the 13th century castle of San Giorgio which offers amazing views of the Livatho region, the sea and the nearing island of Zakynthos.
