Ancient and cosmopolitan, Athens is the oldest city in Europe, and is regarded as the birthplace of Western civilisation. The Greek capital’s archaeological wonders and lively urban centre make it a must-see destination.
See:
Acropolis – One of the Europe’s great architectural masterpieces keeps watch over Athens from its rocky perch. The gleaming monuments and temples of this ancient marble wonder are a highlight of any trip to Greece.
National Archaeological Museum – Regarded as one of the world’s finest museums, it houses an enormous collection of priceless artefacts from Greece’s many archaeological sites.
Ancient Agora – This old market was the commercial and cultural centre of ancient Athens. The modern site has a well-preserved temple and 11th-century church with magnificent Byzantine frescoes
Temple of Olympian Zeus – The largest temple in Greece was home to an enormous ivory and gold statue of Zeus, but is now mostly in ruins. The remaining columns give a sense of this temple’s impressive scale.
Panathenaic Stadium – This unique white marble stadium was built in the 4th century BC, when 50,000 Athenians would pack into it to watch athletics. It was refurbished to host the first modern Olympics in 1896.
Experience:
Explore Plaka and Anafiotika – Wandering the narrow, winding streets of this historic district under the Acropolis is one of the most pleasant outings in Athens.
Cycle the Old City – While most of Athens is unsuitable for bike riders, the archaeological park in the centre of town has been declared car-free. A two-wheeled tour is a lovely way to see the old monuments.
Live Theatre – The ancient Greek tradition of live theatre is alive and well in Athens. In particular, keep your eye out for any performances at the 2000-year-old Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
National Gardens – This peaceful park, filled with ruins, duck ponds and lush sub-tropical trees, is a wonderful place to while away an afternoon.
Secrets of the City
Kerameikos Cemetery – This rarely visited old cemetery dates back almost 2500 years. The old tombstones and mausoleums feature some truly gorgeous carving.
