Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is divided into three parts - the thousand-year old Gornji Grad (Upper Town), the 19th century Donji Grad (Lower Town) and the modern post-war (WWII) Novi Zagreb (New Zagreb) with its high-rise buildings. It is called the city of museums as there are more of them per square foot than in any other city in the world. But this doesn't mean that there is nothing else to do if you are not a history buff then Zagreb is very much alive with bustling streets, coffee shops, boutiques and markets.

• Gornji Grad (Upper Town) – Characterised by cobblestone streets with red tile roof buildings, medieval Gornji Grad is home to the city’s Cathedral, parliament building, numerous museums, galleries and churches.
• Donji Grad (Lower Town) – This is a relatively modern area of Zagreb featuring museums, galleries and the National Theatre. It is spread out around numerous parks which form a U shape, hence why it is known as a horseshoe.
• St Mark’s Church – See one of Zagreb's most symbolic buildings and photographed sites - the colourful St Mark's Church, with its unique tiled roof constructed in 1880.
• Trg bana Jelacica – As all the roads and trams seem to lead here, this is classified as Zagreb's central square and meeting place. It is dominated by a statue of Croat hero Josip Jelacic in the centre.
• Maksimir Park – Easily accessed by a tram is the charming Maksimir Park, featuring artificial lakes, an Echo Pavilion and the 19th century Bellevue Pavilion.

• Museums – Zagreb has its share of museums. One of the best is the City Museum, situated in the Upper Town, dedicated to displaying the history of Zagreb through arts, crafts and a scale model of old Zagreb. Nevertheless, Zagreb's finest museum is the Mimara which presents archaeological collections, art objects and works by well-known European masters such as Rembrandt, Van Dyck, Murillo, Renoir and Degas.
• Markets – There are many markets around Zagreb, including popular Dolac, an open air market which is situated near Trg bana Jelacica (Zagreb’s central square). The flower market has an array of colourful flowers displayed on stalls filling the air with their sweet smell and is located on Petar Preradovic Square, and known locally as Cvjetni trg (the Flower Square).
• Skiing in Croatia - Mount Sljeme, just outside Zagreb is the most conveniently located ski resort offering four ski runs, two ski lifts and a triple chair lift. Other options include the Croatian Olympic Center at Bjelolasica near Karlovac or Platak which has six ski lifts and 10km of cross-country trails.
