The population of the island of Ireland is slightly over 6 million taking in the Republic of Ireland,, Greater Dublin, Northern Ireland and Greater Belfast. Ireland is the third largest island in Europe and the twentieth-largest island in the world and is surrounded by hundreds of islands and islets. Irish people are mainly of the Celtic origin, with the country’s only significant sized minority having descended from the Anglo-Normans. English is the common language, but Irish (Gaelic) is also an official language and is taught in schools.
