HOLIDAY TOURS IN GALILEE, ISRAEL
>
Package
A fertile region of valleys, forests, farms and lakes, Galilee is where Jesus grew up and started sowing the seeds of Christianity. The area abounds in Biblical sights, making it a must-do for Christian travellers.
Regional Hotspots:
Sea of Galilee
– At 214 m below sea level, the Sea of Galilee (also called Lake Kinneret) is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth. Its shores are lined with beautiful beaches, walking trails and camping spots, and many of Christianity’s most important events took place amongst the hills to the north.
Nazareth
– The childhood home of Jesus, Nazareth contains some of Christianity’s holiest sights. The Church of the Annunciation is believed to stand on the site of the Virgin Mary’s house, St Gabriel’s Church is built where the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary, and the Mensa Christi Church houses the slab of rock where Jesus dined with his disciples after the Resurrection.
Tiberias
– One of the four holy cities of Judaism, Tiberias is home to ancient Roman baths, the 12th-century St Peter’s Church and the tombs of several important Jewish scholars. Taking a dip in the mineral-rich waters of Tiberias Hot Springs is a great way to finish off a day of sightseeing.
Safed
– An important centre of Jewish learning, Safed was the birthplace of the Kabbalah movement. Set amongst the mountains of the upper Galilee, the city boasts numerous medieval synagogues and enjoys magnificent views over Northern Israel.
Capernaum
– The remains of this ancient fishing village are located on the north-western shore of the lake. Archaeologists have uncovered a synagogue dating back to the 2nd century AD, as well as what they suppose to be the house of St Peter the Apostle.
Tabgha
– This area on the northern shore is the traditional site of Jesus’ miracle of the loaves and the fishes. The nearby Mount of the Beatitudes is where Jesus is thought to have given his sermon on the mount.
Beit Shean Valley
– Home to kibbutzim, natural springs, well-preserved Roman ruins and a 5th-century synagogue, this lush valley is a true delight. Don’t miss the Crusader-era Belvoir Castle, located on a hilltop overlooking the winding Jordan River.
Yardenit
– Believed by many to be where Jesus was baptised, this site on the Jordan River is a popular spot for Christians to perform their own baptism ceremonies.
