HOLIDAY TOURS IN THE DEAD SEA, ISRAEL
>
Package
At more than 400 metres below sea level, the Dead Sea is about as low as you can go on Planet Earth. It’s also one of the saltiest bodies of water in the world, and you’ll find it nearly impossible to sink in its buoyant waters. Once you’ve soaked up the sun and salt on the Dead Sea’s stunning beaches, be sure to check out some of these other attractions.
Regional hotspots:
Dead Sea Day Spas
– The mineral-rich waters of the Dead Sea are believed to have a range of rejuvenating properties, and its shores are home to numerous health resorts. Checking in to one of these opulent oases for a mud bath, sulphur spa or massage is an essential part of the Dead Sea experience.
Qumran
– The famous Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered near Qumran in 1946. Written in iron-gall ink on papyrus and parchment, some of these religious manuscripts date back to 150 BC, making them the oldest known Biblical documents in the world. The 11 caves where the scrolls were discovered are now open to visitors.
Masada
– This World Heritage–listed fortress is spectacularly set on a steep-sided desert plateau overlooking the Dead Sea. Legend has it that during the 1st century AD nearly 1000 Jews committed suicide at Masada rather than surrender to the Roman Army. An evening sound and light show recounts the history of the citadel in dramatic fashion.
Ein Gedi National Park
– Hikers of all levels will enjoy this beautiful oasis, home to natural springs, endangered animals, tumbling waterfalls, ancient archaeological sites and a beautiful botanic garden.
Judean Desert
– Stretching west from the Dead Sea to the Mountains of Judea, the rugged Judean Desert contains some of Israel’s most breathtaking panoramas. Sheer cliffs, chalk mountains and flat-topped plateaus overlook deep canyons and dry riverbeds, while ancient monasteries lie dotted amongst the unforgiving terrain. Discover the highlights on a 4WD tour or camp out under the stars for the ultimate desert experience.
