HOLIDAY TOURS IN THE GOLAN HEIGHTS, ISRAEL
Home to lush forests, tumbling rivers and more than 30 national parks, the Golan Heights are a haven for hikers and nature-lovers. History buffs don’t miss out either – lying amongst the stunning scenery are some of Israel’s best-preserved Greek, Roman and Byzantine ruins.
Regional hotspots:
Mt Hermon
– This broad, snow-capped mountain is a popular spot for skiing in winter, while taking the cable car to the summit offers breathtaking views all year round.
Banias
– Dating back some 2300 years, this archaeological site features temples, courtyards and grottos dedicated to the Greek god Pan. The surrounding area is a lovely spot for hiking, with swift rapids, peaceful springs and old flourmills.
Wineries
– Conditions in the Golan are perfect for cultivating grapes, and there are several good vineyards in the area. Stop off for a tasting at the Pelter Winery in Ramot or the Golan Heights Winery near Katzrin.
Gamla
– This important archaeological site dates back to the 3rd century BC and was the site of a famous siege during the Great Jewish Revolt against the Romans. Many battle artefacts have been uncovered in Gamla, and the ancient synagogue is one of the oldest in the world.
Nimrod Fortress
– This medieval fortress is spectacularly set on an 800m-high ridge overlooking a narrow valley. Touring the remains of the secret corridors and keep offers a fascinating insight into the bloody battles of the Crusades.
Hamat Gader
– Used for recreation since Roman times, some of these mineral springs reach temperatures of 50°C. The site boasts an ancient 2000-seat theatre and a very modern spa complex – ideal for soaking your aching calves after scrambling over Golan’s many ruins.
Kursi
– A ruined Byzantine monastery with special significance for Christians: it is believed to be where Jesus healed two men possessed by demons. Most of the artefacts recovered from the monastery are housed in the Golan Archaeological Museum in Katzrin.
Hippos
– Excavations of this Greco-Roman city have so far revealed the forum, several temples, the old city gates and two Byzantine churches. Archaeologists are hoping to uncover the entire street network of the ancient city.
