Beersheba – Home to the highly regarded Ben-Gurion University, Beersheba is gaining a reputation as a high-tech research centre. The nearby Israeli Air Force Museum houses an impressive collection of planes and helicopters, which are kept in mint condition by the dry desert air.
Makhtesh Ramon – A naturally formed crater measuring 40 km long and 10 km wide, Makhtesh Ramon boasts black volcanic hills, stunning valleys, and red and yellow rock formations. The nearby town of Mitzpe Ramon has a desert nature centre, a planetarium and an alpaca farm.
Arad – This small desert city is enjoying a new lease of life as a centre of arts and creativity. An abandoned industrial zone has been converted into an artists’ quarter with studios, workshops and galleries. About 10 km from town lie the ruins of Tel Arad, a large Bronze Age city.
Timna – Located 25 km from Eilat, this national park is home to some of Israel’s most spectacular desert landscapes. Don’t miss the unique rock formations known as King Solomon’s Pillars or the 2500-year-old Egyptian copper mines.
Yotvata Hai-Bar Reserve – A nature reserve devoted to the breeding of endangered and locally extinct animals. Species here include the Asiatic ass, Arabian oryx, scimitar oryx and Arabian leopard.
Ein Advat – A hike through through this beautiful canyon will take you past cool springs, lush vegetation, curved-horn ibexes and darting dragonflies. Many birds of prey nest in the sheer cliffs on either side of the gorge.
