• Mattancherry Palace – The Portuguese built the Mattancherry Palace as a gift for the Raja of Kochi in 1555. The Dutch extended the building in the 17th century, hence its nickname, the Dutch Palace. The palace is renowned for its intricately carved wooden ceilings and stunning Hindu murals.
• St Francis Church – Founded by Portuguese Friars in 1503, St Francis is India’s oldest European-built church. The building holds the tombstone of the great Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama, who died while visiting Cochin in 1524.
• Pardesi Synagogue – Built in 1568 (and rebuilt in 1664 after it was destroyed by the Portuguese), the Pardesi Synagogue features beautiful Chinese floor tiles, ornate chandeliers, coloured glass lamps and an elegant clock tower.
