• Wayanad – Nestled among luxuriant hills and sprawling spice plantations, this culturally rich district has many delights for the traveller. Marvel at the 3000-year-old shrine in the Thirunelli Temple, the prehistoric paintings of Edakkal Caves and the crystal-clear waters of the Papanashini stream.
• Trivandrum – Kerala’s capital wows visitors with long beaches and an abundance of historical monuments. A highlight is the Kuthira Malika Palace Museum, a fine example of traditional Keralan architecture with amazing woodcarvings.
• Kottayam: Set between the mountains and backwaters of south-central Kerala, Kottayam is famous for its stunning landscapes, lush rubber plantations and impressive temples. The Thirunakkara Mahadevar Temple hosts a very popular 10-day festival every March.
• Munnar – Surrounded by misty peaks and beautifully landscaped tea estates, Munnar is a haven for active travellers. Set at 2000 metres above sea level, the region’s verdant forests and pristine lakes offer plenty of opportunities for trekking, horseriding, boating and fishing.
• Calicut – Also known as Kozhikode, this busy port city has a long history of trade. The Pazhassirajah museum showcases the city’s heritage through murals, antiques and models, while dolphins can often be spotted in the waves offshore.
• Kollam – The centre of Kerala’s cashew nut industry, Kollam (also called Quilon) is one of the oldest ports on the Arabian Sea. The town boasts a number of important pilgrimage centres while the nearby lake is lined with coconut palms and traditional villages.
