HOLIDAY TOURS IN CHENNAI, INDIA
>
Package
Tamil Nadu’s sprawling capital doesn’t feature in most tourists’ travel plans. But scratch below the surface and you’ll see why this city has a reputation as a cultural and artistic hub, as well as being the best place to immerse yourself in the bustle of South Indian urban life.
See:
Fort St George – Built by the British East India Company in 1653, this fort is now the headquarters of the Tamil Nadu parliament. The on-site museum has a fascinating display of memorabilia and prints from Chennai’s colonial past.
Government Museum – This museum houses a first-rate archaeological collection showcasing sculptures and artefacts from the major periods of South Indian history. The bronze gallery is particularly impressive, as is the National Art Gallery, located in the same complex.
San Thome Cathedral – This Roman Catholic church was built by Portugese settlers in 1504, then rebuilt in neo-Gothic style by the British in 1893. The church is said to contain the remains of St Thomas the Apostle.
Experience:
Tamil cinema – A trip to the movies is a must in Chennai. The city is the centre of India’s Tamil-language film industry, which rivals Mumbai-based Bollywood for the number of pictures produced.
Marina Beach – A great place for people watching, especially in the evenings. Once the heat of the day has died away, this 13km stretch of sand comes alive with impromptu family cricket matches, fortune-tellers, food stalls, kite flyers and courting couples.
Cholamandal Artists’ Village – Located just outside of Chennai, this community was founded in 1966 as a dedicated place for artists to live and work. The traditional thatched-roofed buildings provide the perfect environment for creativity, and often house exhibitions featuring the residents’ paintings and sculptures.
Secrets of the City:
Neer Moar – This spicy buttermilk drink is a popular local specialty. Ask for it at one of the city’s South Indian restaurants.
Parry’s Corner – The old business district features some of the best-preserved art deco buildings in India. Exploring the area’s nooks and crannies is a must for photographers and architecture buffs.
