HOLIDAY TOURS IN DELHI, INDIA
>
Package
Delhi is a city in two halves, where the chaotic, winding streets of the old town are in stark contrast to the wide boulevards and stately buildings of the carefully planned new capital. This fascinating variation, along with a plethora of historical sites and some first-rate shopping, has made Delhi one of India’s most visited cities.
See:
Red Fort – This Mughal fortress was completed in 1648. Behind its imposing sandstone walls you will discover towers, marble halls, royal baths, mosques, gardens and palaces.
Humayun’s Tomb – Often described as the predecessor to the Taj Mahal, this red sandstone building of arches and domes was built as a tomb for the second Mughal emperor in the 16thcentury. The immaculately maintained gardens are some of the best in Delhi.
Jama Masjid – India’s largest mosque is constructed from red sandstone and white marble. Climb the minaret of this striking building for some fantastic views over Old Delhi.
Raj Ghat – This beautiful park contains a square platform of black marble marking the spot where Mahatma Ghandi was cremated after his assassination in 1948. The nearby Ghandi Memorial Museum provides further insights into the life of this remarkable man.
Experience:
A cycle-rickshaw ride through Chandni Chowk – Old Delhi’s congested and chaotic main strip is a riot of people, colour, twisting alleys, tiny shops and the occasional cow or two.
Shopping at Connaught Place – The Colonial British equivalent of a shopping mall, ‘CP’ is two concentric rings of buildings, each one full of stores selling everything from handmade soap and saris to Reeboks.
Secrets of the City:
Spice Market – Near the Fatehpuri Mosque, this wholesale spice market is the place to experience colours and aromas from across the subcontinent. But beware – the scent of fiery chilli in the air may leave your eyes watering.
Iron Pillar – This mysterious pillar, in the grounds of the Quwat-ul-Eslam mosque, has fascinated metallurgists and archaeologists from all over the world. Incredibly, the column has remained uncorroded for over 1600 years!
Sulabh International Museum of Toilets – This bizarre museum has a small but engrossing collection tracing the history and evolution of toilets from 2500BC to the present day.
