HOLIDAY TOURS IN VARANASI, INDIA
>
Package
With a recorded history stretching back some 3400 years, Varanasi is one of the oldest cities in the world. On the banks of the River Ganges, it is an important pilgrimage place for Hindus, who come from all over India to wash away their sins in the city’s holy waters
See:
Ghats – the river at Varanasi is lined with over 80 ghats – series of steps leading down to the water. Wandering the length of these ghats provides some terrific opportunities for people watching, as bathing pilgrims mingle with groups of women washing clothes, kids playing cricket, ash-smeared holy men, beggars, cows and so much more
Vishwanath Temple – The most important Hindu temple in Varanasi was built in 1776 and contains 800kg of gold in its dome and 15-metre-high spire. Drinking from a well on the temple grounds is said to raise believers to a higher spiritual plane.
Sarnath – This small town, 10km northeast of Varanasi, is where Buddha gave his first sermon after achieving enlightenment. The carved Dhanekh Stupa, built by emperor Ashoka in 200 BC, marks the spot where Buddha preached. The surrounding shrines and pleasant parklands make this a lovely spot to escape the bustle of Varanasi.
Experience:
Sunrise Boat Trip – Dawn is when Varanasi is most alive, and taking an early-morning rowboat along the ghats is one of the highlights of any trip to India. Watching the rising sun illuminate the stone steps as hundreds of people bathe and perform ritual prayers is truly unforgettable.
Aarti Ceremony – Seven priests perform this spectacular nightly ceremony on the banks of the river. You will be hypnotised by the ritual of flaming torches, incense, fans, bells and drums as the devotees give thanks to Lord Shiva and the Ganges.
Cremation Ceremony – Hindus believe that Varanasi is the most auspicious place to be burned after death, and public cremations take place almost constantly at certain ghats. While certainly not for everyone, witnessing one of these ceremonies is a fascinating and moving experience. Just remember to keep your distance and behave respectfully.
Secrets of the City:
Varanasi is an excellent place to buy high-quality silk. However, it pays to shop around and you might need to hone your bargaining skills to get a good price.
