HOLIDAY TOURS IN SIKKIM, INDIA
>
Package
A small, remote state tucked away in India’s northeast, Sikkim shares its border with Nepal, Bhutan and Tibet. Not on the traditional tourist trail, this spectacular region is a haven for trekkers, nature-lovers and those seeking an insight into Tibetan Buddhist culture.
Regional hotspots:
Rumtek Monastery
– This fascinating monastery is the official centre of the ‘Black Hat’ sect of Tibetan Buddhism. A private room contains the original black hat, supposedly made from the hair of angels. The monastery is well known in India for its energetic
chaam
dance, which features masked monks leaping in the air while carrying sharp swords.
Tsongmo Lake
– A stunning glacial lake near the Tibetan border, which is home to a large population of ducks, as well as various other migratory birds. Don’t pass up the opportunity to take a yak-ride around the lake!
Samdruptse
– This hilltop near Namchi features an incredible 45m-high bronze-painted statue of Padmasambhava, the priest who introduced Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th-century.
Khangchendzonga
– At an elevation of 8586m, the 3rd-highest mountain in the world can be seen from almost anywhere in Sikkim, but the best way to get up close to Khangchendzonga is on a multi-day trek from Yuksom. You can camp in tents or sleep in the many trekkers’ huts along the way.
Tashiding
– This small village is known for its old monastery. Built on top of a steep hill in 1641, the monastery has some truly spectacular murals and a huge statue of the Buddha.
Yumthang Valley
– An incredibly scenic valley bordered by forests and snowy Himalayan peaks. There are some beautiful hot springs, tumbling waterfalls and dramatic views.
Pemayangtse Monastery
– The name of this important monastery translates to ‘Perfect Sublime Lotus’, and it is easy to see why – the walls and doors are covered with beautifully painted religious motifs.
