Largely destroyed in the Second World War, Milano lacks the immediate charm and beauty of cities like Florence and Rome. It is however the economic engine of Italy and one of the global capitals of fashion. It is, for Italian standards, an efficient, cosmopolitan and modern city. Accommodation in particular can be quite expensive, and should be booked in advance, particularly around the many trade fairs held here. Sprawling across the vast flat plains of the Po River, Milan is easy to walk around, and public transport is great.
