One of the world’s most recognisable buildings is in Pisa.  The fame of the leaning tower of Pisa or “Torre Pendente” as it is locally known overshadows the spectacular beauty of the surrounding Campo dei Miracoli, the site of 2 other Romanesque masterpieces.  Arguably the best-kept lawns in Italy create a space and setting other Italian buildings so desperately lack.  Historically a naval power, and centuries-old university town, Pisa is quietly charming and characteristic.

• Campo dei Miracoli – the “field of miracles” is the site of the Leaning Tower, the Duomo and the Baptistry - forming a trio of architectural masterpieces in this breathtaking square
• Piazza dei Cavalieri – “Knights’ Square” is built on the site of the former Roman amphitheatre, and was the heart of medieval Pisa.  It is surrounded by some splendid buildings such as the Palazzo dei Cavalieri. 
• Palazzo dell’Ororlogio – One of the splendid buildings on the Piazza dei Cavalieri, it is built on the site where Count Ugolino della Gherardesca starved to death with his sons and grandsons, as recorded in Dante’s Inferno and memorably portrayed in Rodin’s haunting sculpture.

Experience:

• Borgo Stretto – The centre of the medieval city and along the banks of the River Arno are some fine galleries and characteristic streets.
• Palio delle Quattro Antiche Repubbliche Marinare – This regatta rotates each year between the four former maritime powers of Pisa, Genova, Amalfi and Venice.  The centuries-old rivalry lives on in this lively festival and its races.

Secrets of the City:

• Climb the Leaning Tower – Only a limited number of visitors are permitted to climb the tower, so make sure you book in advance.
• Camposanto – The cemetery in the Campo dei Miracoli is an interesting excursion.  Although badly damaged in WW2, there are still remarkable frescoes, and “recycled” Ancient Greek and Roman tombstones.
