Lombardy is a diverse and well developed region in Northern Italy. Lombardy offers fascinating medieval history and contemporary style.  Nowhere are the periods of history better juxtaposed than in the capital, Milan.  The picturesque lakes in the north are popular with the Milanese elite and tourists alike.  Occupied by the Venetians, Spanish, Austrians and Napoleon, the region’s towns have a wealth of architectural and artistic treasures.   

Regional Hotspots:

• Milan - One of the most famous cities in the world, cosmopolitan and lively Milan is often overlooked by tourists.  Milan offers amazing examples of architecture from various periods of history including distinctive Fascist architecture from the Mussolini era.  Leonardo Da Vinci’s Last Supper is also an exhibit not to be missed.
• Monza - Outside Milan, Monza is the venue for the Italian Formula 1 Grand Prix.  Its cathedral houses the Iron Crown of Lombardy, said to contain one of the nails used in Christ’s crucifixion.  The Villa Reale, a Habsburg residence built in 1777 is also worth a visit. 
• Bergamo - The “upper town”, Città Alta is well preserved with fine architecture and interesting museums.  Romantic in any season, walk through the cobblestone streets and enjoy the views from the city walls. 
• Lake Como -  Glamorous, picturesque Lake Como needs little introduction.  Even without knowing, tens of millions of people the world over have seen the stunning beauty of this part of Italy in films such as Star Wars and James Bond.  The town of Como is an easy trip from Milan, and boats to other parts of the lake depart from here.  Other popular towns on the lake are Bellagio, Varenna, Cernobbio, and Menaggio.
• Pavia -  Filled with university students, this small town on the banks of the Ticino River has a lively atmosphere.  Just outside the city is the magnificent Renaissance monastery complex - Certosa di Pavia.  
• Mantova - The town centre is surrounded on 3 sides by water.  Palazzo Ducale is a must see, as is Palazzo del Te.  This is one of Lombardy’s most rewarding destinations.
