Stretching almost coast to coast across the Italian peninsula, the region of Emilia-Romagna is full of history, and home to some of Italy’s best food. Running like an artery through the region is the ancient Roman Via Aemilia, parts of which can still be seen beside the modern construction. The capital Bologna, a gracious and wealthy medieval town is famous for its university – the oldest in Europe. There are popular resort towns along the Adriatic coast, and many Renaissance towns inland.  Some of Italy’s most famous exports come from this region – Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar and Ferrari cars. 

Regional Hotspots:

• Bologna - There is a lot packed into this town.  Culture and history abound, the large student population is a significant contributor to the city’s vibrancy.  Don’t make the same mistake as millions of tourist by restricting your visit here to changing platforms at the station.  
• Parma - The town of Parma is filled with Renaissance treasures along with the WW2-damaged Palazzo della Pilotta.  Here you will also have the chance to eat parmigiano reggiano (Parmensan) cheese at its source.  As the locals will affirm, a certain flavour is lost when it is transported.  Another specialty is the Parma prosciutto ham. 
• Modena - One of the most affluent towns in Italy, Modena is home to Ferrari, Bugatti, Lamborghini and Maserati.  The region is world-famous for its balsamic vinegar, and its cathedral is UNESCO World Heritage-listed for architectural significance.
• Ferrara - This UNESCO World Heritage walled town is filled with architectural treasures, the Castello Estense, the cathedral, and Palazzo dei Diamanti for example. 
• Ravenna - Once the capital of the western regions of the Byzantine Empire, Ravenna’s early Christian ruins are another World Heritage Site in the region.  The well preserved mosaics from the era are a highlight of this charming town.
• San Marino - This tiny independent republic is worth exploring if only for the novelty.  Located near Rimini, it makes for a pleasant day trip. 
• Rimini - Incredibly popular in the summer, Rimini caters to families and young Italians.  It is filled with nightlife and recreation activities.  Outside the holiday season, it tends to shut down almost completely.
