Island Hotspots: Palermo – This is the islands capital city which boasts a combination of medieval streets and outdoor markets. Concert halls, theatres, churches and villas are abundant amongst other great sights. Some of the essential sights include the mosaic decorated chapel, Cappella Palatina; the hybrid Cattedrale; and first-class museums. In Palermo admire the traces of history from the Phoenicians to the Spanish domination and through to the Liberty style. Taormina – Taormina is perched on a high plateau overlooking the sea, and situated with a spectacular view of Mt. Etna. In the centre of the town lie the famous Greek amphitheatre and many quaint buildings. In Taormina you can undertake a guided walking tour of the town or join in on a tour to the village of Savoca with its famous catacombs of the Cappuccini Convent and the Car Vitelli- featured in the movie ‘The Godfather’. Mount Etna – This seems to be part of Sicily which is famously renowned worldwide. It is one of the world’s largest volcanoes and the most active volcano in Europe. The summit of Etna displays memorable landscapes when the steep and lower slopes are explored. The Mountain can be accessed by car and also public transport. If a less risky approach is preferred there is The Circumentnea Railway which provides alternative Volcanic thrills, by a track around the base discovering vegetation and lava. Erice – The Medieval village with its charming little streets is a mountain town with creeping hillside alleys, stone buildings and silent charm. Those with the love of history and beauty will enjoy visiting Erice, as it has many opportunities to get amongst the scenery. Things to do include a guided visit of the impressive Baroque town; walking through the attractive Piazza Umberto and experience the views overlooking Trapani, the Egadi Islands and Cape Bon in Tunisia on a very clear day. Traponi – Situated in Western Sicily, like Erice, the attractive town is a brilliant stop over. Those adventuring out to the Egadi Islands or driving through to Erice may use Traponi as a break in their journey. The largest town in the region gives a different side to Italy as it features palm trees and active fishing harbours. Whilst in Traponi an orientation tour of the town and its salt windmills is a great experience.
