Umbria is often called ‘the green heart of Italy’, lying as it does at the crossroads between the north and the south. The central region is the only region in Italy to have neither a coast nor a border with a foreign country. Regional Hot Spots: Orvieto – Orvieto is superbly placed between Rome and Florence and is home to the Duomo, one of the greatest Gothic buildings in the country. The medieval town also boasts underground caves which give a fascinating insight into the abundant history of the picturesque town. Perugia – The capital of Umbria, Perugia is an imposing hill town overlooking the River Tiber. The town is known as the university town, as it is residence to two famous universities, as well as the cathedral and the Palazzo dei Priori. Assisi – In Assisi, visitors are given the chance to admire the San Francesco Basilica with its renaissance masterpieces and visit its nearby church of St. Mary of Angels. The Basilica of St. Francis is set high on a hill above the town which features series of frescoes by Giotto depicting the life of St. Francis. Spoleto – The ancient city of Spoleto is located in the Italian province of Perugia and is home to several of Italy’s most ancient Romanesque churches. The town is situated at the head of a large, open valley bordered by mountains. History of the town can be found all the way through as it is displayed in the towns museums and through its monuments.
