Capri, considered as a legendary idyll, is situated in the Campania region in the Gulf of Naples. It is an island of incomparable beauty, with the Blue Grotto being its most famous treasure. It can be accessed by hydrofoil from Sorrento (20 mins) or Naples (40 mins). Capri is a definite tourist attraction and a confirmed spot on the Mediterranean for celebrities. Its remarkable caves, plentiful vegetation and the charming narrow lanes of its small towns make Capri fantastically beautiful. See: Grotta Azzurra (Blue Grotto) – This is a noted sea cave on the coast of the island of Capri. The grotto has a partially submerged opening into the sea and inside it the sea seems to be lit from underwater in a magnificent blue colour. Capri Town – The heart of Capri is the Piazza Umberto I a small, compact and closed-off square that resembles a courtyard. Surrounding the square are the Clock Tower, municipal offices (located in the rooms of the former bishop's residence) and a series of stores and cafés. Sights to see here are the 14th century Carthusian monastery Certosa di San Giacomo and Giardini di Augusto (Gardens of Augustus) which commands a good view of the Isola Faraglioni, the rock stacks along the southern coast. Villa Jovis (Jupiter’s Villa) – This Roman palace located east of the town centre and built by Emperor Tiberius who ruled between AD 27 and AD 37, is the largest of the twelve Tiberian villas on Capri. Villa San Michele in Anacapri - Built around the turn of the 20th century, by the Swedish physician, Dr Axel Munthe, on the ruins of the Roman Emperor, Tiberius' villa, is Villa San Michele. It houses Roman sculptures and gardens with panoramic views of the city of Capri and its marina, the Sorrentine Peninsula and Mount Vesuvius. Experience: Shopping – Ceramic tiles and everything to do with lemons are the big sellers in Capri. The island is famous for its perfume, which smells like lemon, and limoncello, which tastes like sweet lemon vodka. Visit Limoncello Capri located in Anacapri to try the liqueur while the perfumeries are located everywhere around the island. Restaurants – Wine and dine at one of the many restaurants located at either Capri or Anacapri and experience sweeping panoramic views, as provided by some. Festival – The main festival event held in Capri is from 1 to 6 January, featuring local folk groups who perform in Anacapri and in Capri’s Piazza Umberto I.
