Situated at the south-west tip of the world-famous Lake Como, the town of Como is just 45 km from Milan.  Surrounded by misty mountains, it has long been a popular resort for the Milanese elite, who have over the centuries built incredible palaces here.  There are two main train stations here, the more convenient being Como Lago Nord, connected to Milan’s Cadorna station, not Stazione Centrale.  This station brings you right to the heart of Como, and the shores of the sparkling lake.  From here, boats depart for various towns around the lake, and the historic centre is just a short stroll along the waterfront.  

See:

• Il Duomo – this church has an interesting blend of architectural styles, construction began in 1396, and completed in 1740.  The surrounding area is filled with cafes, restaurants and shops.  
• Piazza Cavour – a splendid square facing the water, it is often occupied by markets and entertainment
   Funicular Railway – running between Como and the small mountain village of Brunate, the views over the lake at the top are spectacular
• Baradello Tower – the only remaining medieval watchtower, that once protected the town can be visited by foot, and offers similarly stunning panoramas over the lake
• Tempio Voltiano – this lakeside neoclassical structure is dedicated to Como’s Alessandro Volta, inventor of the battery

• Boat Tours – when travelling to other towns around the area, the journey is almost as enjoyable as the destination. 
• Villa Olma (Olmo) – just a short distance from the centre, this is one of the area’s most famous buildings with beautiful gardens and an adjoining park, now often used for meetings, conventions and exhibitions

• Silk – traditionally the centre of Italy’s silk industry, Como produces ties, scarves and printed fabrics for some of the most famous names in fashion.  Pick up a bargain at one of the many outlet stores selling excess production at a fraction of their designer price tags
• Antique Market – the last Saturday of the month sees a huge antique market fill the streets in the historic centre
