>
Package
Sri Lanka’s immense natural and cultural diversity makes exploring the country’s lesser-known attractions a true delight. From ancient capitals and colonial hill stations to stunning beaches and pristine national parks, this exotic teardrop-shaped island holds something for everyone.
Other Cities of Interest:
A former capital of the Sinhalese kingdom, World Heritage–listed
Anuradhapura
was one of the grandest cities in ancient Ceylon. The town has an abundance of interesting sights, including a famous 4th-century Samadhi Buddha statue and a sacred 2200-year-old bodhi tree – the oldest authenticated tree in the world.
Polonnaruwa
is another archaeological hotspot, whose fascinating ruins include the 12th-century Royal Palace and the former Temple of the Tooth Relic.
West of Polonnaruwa is one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic sights – the rock fortress of
Sigiriya
. Towering above the jungle on an immense pillar of rock, this World Heritage–listed citadel is surrounded by an elaborate network of ancient moats and gardens.
Ideally located between Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals, the village of
Habarana
offers a great selection of hotels, and is only a few kilometres away from the remarkable cave temple complex at Dambulla.
Hidden amongst coconut plantations on the southwest coast is
Wadduwa
, a laid-back beach town where visitors can try a range of traditional Ayurvedic treatments. Further south is
Bentota
, an established resort with a range of fantastic hotels and one of the best beaches on the west coast.
Located on the southern coastal plains,
Yala
is Sri Lanka’s most-visited national park. The large reserve contains a diverse variety of ecosystems, from monsoon forests to marine wetlands, and is an essential stop on any tour of Sri Lanka’s natural wonders. Take a game safari with an expert naturalist and keep your eyes peeled for elephants, leopards, crocodiles, deer, monkeys, peafowls and jackals.
80 km south of Kandy is
Nuwara Eliya
, a former British hill station whose cool climate and fine colonial buildings have earned it the nickname ‘Little England’. This pretty town boasts a number of architectural gems, including the old post office and Victorian-era Hill Club, while the surrounding area features beautiful waterfalls and picturesque tea plantations.
