Tuxtla is a modern city that has pre-Hispanic and colonial wealth that blends in with its natural exuberance. • Plaza Civica – is the main area of interest in Tuxtla and has recently been refurbished with ostentatious marble, fountains and the white-washed San Marcos Cathedral. Near the cathedral is the Plaza San Marcos which is full of life and bustling with vendors from the highlands in the handicraft market.
• San Marcos Cathedral – rings its bell tower every hour with a mechanical procession of the twelve apostles going through a complicated routine accompanied by a carillon of 48 bells.
• Miguel Alvarez del Toro Zoo – is situated in the south-east part of the city in the small forest El Zapotal and covers an area of 100hactres. Small in size you can manage to see all the exhibits and all the enclosures have lots of foliage in a beautifully built area into the hillside.
