• Coimbra – The capital of Central Portugal, Coimbra prides itself as a cultural attraction. This town is home to the oldest university in the country in addition to a number of interesting museums, libraries and chapels. With the vast number of cafes and local hang outs a noticeable presence of the university lifestyle is about the town; however it is the outskirts of the city that presents the opportunity to enjoy the quiet riverfront and parks.
• Aveiro – With history dating back as far as 959AD, Aveiro hosts a number of outstanding historical attractions such as the Museu de Averio housed in the former Jesus Monastery. Once a thriving port trading in fishing and salt making, this coastal village is surrounded by salt pans and lagoons with the unique Central Canal similar to those in Venice, featuring as a highlight.
• Leiria – A town dotted with attractive houses and ancient cobbled streets, Leiria is built on the hillsides situated closely to the River Lis. Attractions such as Rodrigues Lobo Square and the church of São Pedro provide visual interest while Leiria Castle, once the residence of Dom Dinis and Queen Isabel of Aragon, is the highlight, located on the prominent hill behind the town.
• Tomar – A small but remarkable ancient village, this Portuguese town’s history is the stand out attraction. The Convento de Cristo, a castle turn monastery, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the foundation of the 12th century history of the Knights of the Temple of Jerusalem. The Rio Nabao and Praça da República are also pleasant to visit.
• Évora – Also included in the UNESCO World Heritage list, Évora is one of the most visually pleasing towns of Central Portugal, with striking landscapes and a range of architectural style amongst the buildings. Historically rich, this town contains a large variety of monuments erected during a number of different historical periods and also features the ancient wall once used to encircle a portion of the city.
