With sweeping plains, vast mountains, ancient cities and shimmering lakes, eastern Turkey is a scenic delight. This region is significantly less developed than the western part of the country, and its small, rural villages offer fascinating glimpses into the old way of life.
Regional hotspots:
Mt Nemrut
– One of the most popular destinations in eastern Turkey, this remarkable World Heritage site is renowned for the colossal statues on its summit, constructed by a power-hungry king over 2000 years ago.
Erzurum
– Regarded as the capital of the East, Erzurum was an important Seljuk city between the 11th and 13th centuries. Its historic roots can still be seen in the many beautiful buildings along its main street, as well as in the twin minarets of the iconic Cifte Minarel Medrese.
Mt Ararat
– According to the Bible, Mt Ararat was the final resting place of Noah’s Ark. True or not, this stunning 5137-metre snow-capped volcano is a sight to behold.
Ishak Pasha Palace
– Located near the town of Dogubeyazit, this semi-ruined palace is one of the finest examples of 18th-century Ottoman architecture in Turkey.
Ani
– Located near the Russian-influenced city of Kars, Ani was the splendid capital of a medieval Armenian empire. Now lying in ruins, the site contains the impressive remains of churches, monasteries, mosques and citadels.
Van
– Situated on the shores of scenic Lake Van, this lively city has several interesting monuments, including a striking citadel and a lovely lakeside church. Van even boasts its own variety of cat, whose white fur, different-coloured eyes and love of swimming place it apart from most felines.
Gaziantep
– Famous for its scrumptious pistachio baklava, Gaziantep is an energetic city with superb museums and an imposing citadel. Also of interest is the intriguing Coppersmith’s Bazaar, where metalwork artisans practice their craft along the narrow streets.
Harran
– Mentioned in the Book of Genesis, this ancient city is renowned for its distinctive beehive-shaped mud houses, which are constructed entirely without wood.
Mardin
– An enticing sandstone town cascading down a hillside, Mardin is a multicultural city with dozens of interesting mosques and monasteries.
