Stretching south from Gallipoli to the glittering shores of the Mediterranean, Turkey’s Aegean Coast is dotted with incredible historic sites, lovely beaches and laid-back coastal villages.
Regional hotspots:
Ephesus
– Once of the best-preserved Greco-Roman cities in Europe, the archaeological site at Ephesus provides a fascinating insight into ancient life in Asia Minor. Wander the 2000-year-old marble streets to discover a 25,000-seat theatre, the remarkable Celsus Library, and the single remaining column of the Temple of Artemis. Also of interest is a house believed to be the last home of the Virgin Mary.
Troy
– Located 36 km from Canakkale, the city made famous in Homer’s
Iliad
was assumed to be a work of fiction until its remains were uncovered in 1868. Some of the ruins here date back to 3000 BC, and kids will love the wooden replica of the legendary Trojan horse
Pergamon
– The city where parchment was invented, Pergamon is renowned for its well-preserved Greek and Roman ruins. Of particular interest are the Asclepion, an ancient medical centre; the Acropolis, home to magnificent temples and a 10,000-seat theatre; and the Red Basilica, an immense temple once used to worship the gods of Egypt.
Pamukkale
– This World Heritage–listed city has been a spa centre since Roman times. Over thousands of years, the hot, mineral-rich water cascading from the Earth has formed a series of spectacular limestone terraces, pools and stalactites.
Aphrodisias
– Renowned for its temple to Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love, this site also boasts Turkey’s largest ancient theatre (capacity 30,000) and a fine selection of Roman-era sculptures.
Assos
– Also called Behramkale, this picturesque seaside village is overlooked by a ruined Doric temple surrounded by olive groves. It’s a lovely spot to unwind for a day or two.
Ayvalik
– Famous for producing olive oil and soap, this coastal town also boasts charming old Ottoman houses and several mosques housed in converted orthodox churches. Nearby beaches are long and sandy, and the waters offshore are dotted with beautiful islands.
Cesme
– This resort town enjoys beautiful beaches, an impressive Ottoman fortress, fabulous sunset views and a delightful main square with restaurants, cafes and teahouses.
