Galle Accommodation |
Galle said to be the famous 'Tarshish' of the Bible, is the Port where the Portuguese first landed in Sri Lanka. Today it is a world heritage site and not to be missed when holidaying in Sri Lanka.
Visit the famous fort in Galle which was originally built by the Portuguese in 1589. After the Dutch occupation it was destroyed and rebuilt on a larger scale to cover an area of 36 hectares. Fortified by the Dutch who ruled maritime Sri Lanka in the 17th & 18th centuries the city still retains the air of old Holland. Our hotels in Galle are cheek by jowl with old Dutch churches and monuments with armorial bearings and mingle with well preserved old Dutch houses and narrow alleys still bearing Dutch names. Most hotels in Galle are overshadowed by the well preserved fort with its imposing crested and monogrammed gateway dated 1669.
Tempo Holidays recommends The Lighthouse Hotel 2 km from Galle town and one of Sri Lanka's boutique hotels. This luxury hotel offers the discerning traveller a choice of restaurants and bars, two outdoor swimming pools and several sports facilities. It is the only hotel in Galle with a private beach.
While basking in the sun at your luxury hotel in Galle don't forget to pick up some of Sri Lanka's exquisite handicrafts. Choose from handmade lace, ivory carvings, moonstone jewellery and beautiful translucent tortoise shell ware, including bracelets, trinket boxes and combs - some inlaid with silver.
