Jordan abounds in archaeological riches, the most famous of which is the lost city of Petra. Carved into the cliffs of a deep desert gorge, Petra was the centre of the Nabataean Kingdom and from this outpost the Nabataeans dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia. Ultimately conquered by Rome, Petra literally fell off the map and was lost to the western world for over 300 years. Petra was ‘rediscovered’ in the early 19th century and today is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Petra was also recently voted one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. The new town of Petra is known as Wadi Mousa. Hotels are located in Wadi Mousa and most are a short distance from the entrance to Petra.
