As far as historic cities go, they don’t get much better than Athens. The centre of the city is an open-air museum, where visitors ogle the Acropolis, Parthenon and Theatre of Dionysos, among other sights. Visit the Panathenaic Stadium, built entirely of marble, where the first modern Olympic Games was held in 1896. Among the history, there’s a bustling modern city too, where there are excellent restaurants, hotels and shops, gentrifying neighbourhoods and lively nightlife quarters.
