Naples

Italy’s third-largest city is the gateway to the country’s south and some of its most popular sights. But Naples is also one of the country’s oldest cities and its historic centre, with its jaw-dropping palaces, castles and cathedrals, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Watch the city’s citizens on the move in the huge Piazza del Plebescito, before exploring the museum at the adjacent Royal Palace. The piazza is also home to the San Carlo Opera House, where ballet and opera is still performed within the glamorous interior. Located directly opposite is the Galleria Umberto I, a spectacular shopping arcade with vaulted glass ceilings. With a backdrop of Mt Vesuvius and a slightly faded glamour, Naples is a part of Italy that shouldn’t be missed, especially for anyone who loves food – the pizza, pasta and gelato here is beyond compare.
