Northern Italy

Famous for its lakes – favoured by the Hollywood elite and international jet set – and gracious cities, Italy’s north offers so much to the traveller, especially during the country’s warmer months.
Indulge in the romance of fair Verona, and head to the Verona Arena, constructed in the first century AD and still used today for spectacular opera performances. Explore Venice’s St Marks Square then take a bucket-list gondola ride on the canals. Feast on local specialties – tortellini and tagliatelle with ragú sauce – in Bologna. Stroll the fashionable streets of Milan, the city where designer shopping exists alongside one of the world’s most famous artworks, da Vinci’s The Last Supper.
Away from the cities, live like a movie star, if only for a day or two, on the shores of dramatic Lake Como. Stunning Bellagio, with its snaking, cobbled streets and grand hotels, is the scenic main town on its shores. Take a boat ride on Lake Maggiore, and stop for a while at Isola Bella, shaped like a ship and decorated with flowers and plants in terraces.
You haven’t explored this region of Italy, though, until you’ve walked the ruggedly beautiful coastline of Cinque Terre. Explore its five brightly coloured villages and stroll along the walking trails set high above the sea.
