Umbria is the green heart of Italy. Tucked inland, the region borders neither the sea nor neighbouring countries, and it’s overrun with forests, meadows carpeted with flowers and medieval hilltop towns. Steeped in tradition, Umbria has retained its old-world customs and historic legacy – perhaps because of its central location. Sip on robust wines while reading a good book at a tiny restaurant, and sample truffles and fresh handmade pasta in little towns. Visit the village of Orvieto in the region’s south, which straddles volcanic rock, and make the pilgrimage to the holy Basilica di San Francesco in Assisi. Umbria is imbued with an authenticity that will have you returning again and again.
